World Suicide Prevention Day 2017

10th September 2017

Future Directions, changing lives!

Today, Sunday 10th September 2017 marks this years World Suicide Prevention Day. This campaign has a goal of raising awareness of how to prevent suicide through community action. Although the common outcome of this day is to prevent suicide occurring in our communities, this years slogan is: ‘Take a minute, change a life.’

2017 is the 15th World Suicide Prevention Day. Starting in 2003, as an initiative of the International Association for Suicide Prevention and endorsed by the World Health Organization, it takes place on the same day each year and has grown each and every year.

In the past it was suggested that individuals with a learning disability were protected from suicidal thoughts and behaviours, many believing that their cognitive ability didn’t allow such feelings. However recent studies and case reports, show clear evidence that people with a learning disability do think about, attempt and die by suicide.  Future Directions wanted to make a film which showed how one of the ladies they support has dealt with suicide and how she how helps the CIC to train carers and staff members alongside other professionals.  Making such a film, has to be undertaken in an extremely sympathetic and structured manner.  Questions need to be closed enough to not let the person open too many personal memories whilst still be able to get the story across from where they were, to where they are today.  The staff we work with are always extremely supportive of the way we film and everything is organised in advance so as to avoid distress or upset with the person being filmed.  Filming individuals with mental health problems and learning disabilities can be challenging but we offer complete flexibility in that, if the filming cannot take place due to personal reasons, we understand and always offer alternatives.  Filming and producing such thought provoking and awareness raising films such as this can be extremely useful on social media to get your message to many.  This story is full of honesty and integrity and we are proud to work with Future Directions and all of their team.
